Nomadic Books is a 3 day workshop by fanfare inc. at IED Madrid
We browse, scan, skim, study and occasionally read in layers when approaching printed matter. Adding to this we might listen, experience or even move around the piece.
While the medium of expression has roots that can be traced all the way back to cave paintings made 40.000 years ago, the field of written expression has since the development of writing, rapidly been moving towards becoming an element capable of being shared with others. When printing introduced the shape of the publication, the medium of printed information once and for all took the possibility of being multiplied and eventually nomadic.
This brings us to a current moment of exploration: while a printed surface has the quality of traveling and being shared in various ways, it also posses conditions that are restrained: flat and 2D. This framework stands in contrast to the open, movable and spacious elements of the publication as an object:
What options do we have to present the book?
Do you read it, see it or hear it?
Is it flat?
Could you move through it?
Would you walk on it?
Or is it in fact round and multi-layered?
The workshop will take shape for 3 days during which we will direct the focus to ways of experiencing a publication and the spacious relevance of presenting printed matter. Throughout the workshop days we will collectively give shape to a a publication, and the vehicle for which to display it on. The workshop is a continuation of the project "Autoedita con Alegría"
